Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument Expansion

  • President Obama recently expanded the Papah?naumoku?kea Marine National Monument in the Pacific Ocean and made a visit to the remote outpost of Midway Atoll this week.  Considered both hallowed ground for its roll in WWII and still bearing the scars of a military outpost  as well as pristine, untouched marine environments, the Midway Atoll is a place nearly impossible to get to.

With only 50 permanent residents and no commercial flights into the airstrip it truly is an isolated outpost of American soil  President Obama made an unprecedented trip to the small outpost to highlight the expansion of the National Monument that President G.W Bush designated in 2006.  Now four times its original size the Marine Monument is twice the size of Texas and 1 in 4 species found within it are found no where else in the world.  It is truly a place to be preserved and protected.
