We started TCarta Marine to provide an alternative to the two most-widely used forms of bathymetric data: the free data sets provided by GEBCO and ETOPO2, and measured data gathered from sonar surveys.
While GEBCO and ETOPO2 are excellent data sets that provide worldwide coverage, many users of the data are ultimately frustrated by the lack of detail along the continental shelf, the area of greatest interest.
Sonar surveys are the pinnacle of bathymetric accuracy, with the possibility of resolutions as fine as 1 cm. These surveys are also very expensive ($20,000 to $40,000 per day) and are limited to gathering data over a maximum area of about 100 km² per day.
TCM creates high-resolution interpolated bathymetric models along the continental shelf around the world at a price that is a small fraction of the cost of conducting an ocean survey. Many of our oil and gas clients use TCM’s data to narrow the areas of their planned sonar surveys and save time spent at sea.
Other uses of TCM’s data have included offshore geological analysis, pipeline planning, tsunami modeling, environmental and fisheries management, and alternative-energy siting studies. Click here to see our areas of coverage and contact us for a quote on your area of interest.
